You're right, my friend. It is pure comedy and a perfect slice of 60' Americana complete with the incongruous and non sequitur dialogue, laden with LSD references. You'd never get away with that stuff to-day and you could never get an actor to deliver it so well. Plus, I don't think the kid's to-day would understand the joke. In addition the "Love Power" song is a perfect parody of all the peace and love songs produced in those days. A far cry from the themes of to-day's nusic.
I remember seeing the guy who sings, in many beatnik/hippie roles from that era and he never missed the mark. See, for example, his role in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World". Too bad I always missed his name. Alas, where are those unsung greats now? Who is there to fill his shoes? Not to mention, Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.
When I saw him in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" with the beach house and the whole groovy, daddy-o scene, I knew what my ideal life looked like. It's the only thing that has ever made sense to me. I should be on the beach. What the hell am I doing with my life?
Toronto, at one time, struck me as "Echo Beach", an ideal, romantic place according to a local Toronto band, but, in reality, not of this world; an ideal that doesn't exist. I found the bitter truth after three years of soul-wasting Toronto life at York U.
However, all is not lost. I know that you have tried the Vancouver and L.A. beaches but there are many others. Follow your dream brother. As a man in a brothel in Nevada once said to me, "Man, the girls in this town don't like me." I'm not sure what he was getting at. I mean, we were in a cathouse after all. I expected it was the locals job to like you. Nevertheless, I said to him, "Move to another town, then." I have yet to take my own advice to my eternal disappointment...

Dick Shawn.
That's the actor's name.
