Old-Time Feminism
All that penis talk reminded me of a 1981 Canadian documentary film entitled, 'Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography'. It offers the fruition of '70s old school feminist thought on the portrayal of women in mainstream US porn of the time. I can't say it seems much better now - from what I've heard.
Anyway, in one of the scenes this guy is sitting on the couch with his angry wife and the interviewer. Buddy very quickly (in the editing) breaks down in tears, inconsolable - not that any consoling is offered - because he is a man. All men are evil.
Here's the conceptual art theory thing: 70s feminism was hardball and extreme, but there were some very good ideas and it was clear. What solid models do women and girls have now?
Why do I have this awful feeling that most young women would much prefer to watch yet another rerun of 'Sex in the City' than read 'The Second Sex'?
I'm gonna go beat a drum in the forest now.

"Not A Love Story" is Canadian??? Is a documentary?? I guess IMDB.com can't be wrong.
When we were sceened that in school it was billed as a film banned in Canada (i.e. it was American made) and a "mocumentary" because it had been totally scripted, directed, and acted: cinéma vérité.
This is from Wikipedia: "Feminist documentary films of the 1970s often used cinéma-vérité techniques but very soon this sort of 'realism' was criticized for its deceptive pseudo-natural construction of reality. In 1979 Michelle Citron released Daughter Rite, a feminist pseudo-documentary which deconstructs the conventions of cinéma vérité."
Just goes to prove that Scott Forsythe knew nothing about films except instances of the communist manifesto illustrated. Blech!!

Yeah, you can look it up on the NFB website.
This post is all that remains of about 2,000 words of Rant on the death of the NFB with this film serving as its death knell. I brutally edited it in order to 'keep it light' which is my motto for 2006.
But I've got some inside info on the NFB, pal... [remaining text has been edited - Art Slob]
