Within this week's Gallery Crawl promo is a riddle of sorts....

Q: Which of these two art works is the original image?

A: Neither.

Q: Who painted the original?

A: I don't know.

Q: Does it matter?

What a great work. This is a beautiful image.

I absolutely agree. It would be nice to know which contemporary artist did it. The guy who did these two images actually ripped it off the original. He's a conceptual artist, I guess. He makes smaller versions of actual original art.

I'd like to see the larger original for the impact. The copyist alters the washed background, but I belief the portrait is scanned.

Bill I don't understand these look like paintings to me, they are just photographs of someone else's work but manipulated by the artist?

I think so.

Scanned? I dunno.

Clever fakes? Maybe.

Don't think he's riffin' on the stuff, not painting the images with, for example, ironic twists.

Put in an offer to buy one of his magic-marker price signs as I think it's some of the best work I've seen on show in a long time. They really struck me when I went into the gallery at first, because I've never seen such brash commercialism. Toronto artists and co-op rental 'galleries' could use a good dose of this and a lot less precious navel gazing.
